The European Society of Vascular Medicine (ESVM), which is a confederation of national societies of vascular medicine from European countries, published a new guideline on the management of patients with peripheral arterial disease at the end of 2019. The latest German national guideline from November 2015 served as the basis for this ESVM document. After translation into English and a careful process of discussions and reviewing, including several representatives of the Czech Society of Angiology (M. Bulvas, K. Roztočil, …), the final version of the guideline was accredited by 19 European national societies of angiology.
The objective of the guideline was to provide evidence-based and comprehensive recommendations for optimal care of patients with atherosclerotic peripheral arterial disease of the lower limbs. In this respect, the document covers all areas of epidemiology, diagnostics, prevention, treatment and follow-up of patients with this disease. The most important and newly formulated recommendations should be adopted and used in everyday clinical practice.
